Mt. Zion United Methodist Church

The congregation of this original country church seemed to have outgrown its original structure, and it was in dire need of additional space. Along with adapting to the increasing number of new members, there seemed to be another issue at hand. In order to cater to the growth of the elderly members of the congregation, it seemed necessary to make the worship center more easily assessable. These two issues were resolved via two phases of construction.

The phase I addition addressed the churches' immediate need for space. A portico covered drop off led into a narthex addition that was completed at grade. More space was also created in the sanctuary via a new balcony. Accessibility to the preexisting and new levels was met by the installation of a new elevator tower. The elevator was sensitively integrated into the original bell tower via form and material.

Phase II addressed the Sunday school expansion needs with a full second floor addition over the existing fist floor and a third story addition to the rear. The rear addition provides a more formal secondary entrance and integrated these levels with a new stair tower. Accessible restrooms were also added to all these levels, and a large boiler room was designed to accommodate this addition as well as any future expansions.
