Turn of the century hotel wins Historic Preservation Award for adaptive reuse to medical offices

Client Ward Development Group
Location 421 South Union Street
Havre de Grace, Maryland
Cost $632,000 ±
Size 9,000 SF ±
Completion Spring 2000

The dilapidated early 20th century structure, originally the "Colonial Hotel" and later retrofitted as "Brevin's Nursing Home," was truly and "diamond in the rough" when we were commissioned to polish it into a class "A" style Corporate Office Building.

The entire building was carefully stripped of its years of material layering down to its "original bones." Code complaint stair towers and an accessible elevator were sensitively added, along with three story verandah as a staff amenity. Major structural repairs brought the floor systems up to current medical office loading criteria. The exterior was restored with new replica roof shingles, a stucco exterior finish system, new windows (reminiscent of the originals), and a new columned arched entry porch.

This project was bestowed The Harford County's Historic Preservation Commission's "Historic Preservation Project of the year award" for 2001.

"ADW transformed a run-down, turn-of-the-century hotel/nursing home into a state-of-the-art medical and professional center. They also secured a Harford County preservation award on our behalf." —Jim Martin, VP of Operations
